OIL CHANGE TIPS

How often should you change your oil in South Carolina?

Start with your owner's manual. Most cars built in the last decade on full synthetic call for an oil change every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, or every 6 to 12 months, whichever comes first. But how you drive in the Midlands can move you to the shorter end.

The short answer

Why South Carolina driving often counts as "severe"

Most owner's manuals list two schedules: normal and severe (sometimes called "special operating conditions"). The severe schedule usually covers things like:

Plenty of Midlands drivers check two or three of those boxes from May through September. If that's you, look up the severe schedule in your manual and use that interval instead. It's often noticeably shorter than the normal one.

What about the oil life monitor?

If your car has an oil life percentage on the dash, it's a good guide. Most systems already factor in engine temperature, trip length and revolutions, so they shorten the interval on their own when you drive hard. Change the oil when it gets to around 15 to 20 percent, and don't let it hit zero.
